Understanding the Goals of Humane Society

Humane society is basically the group that is dedicated to prevent abuse or cruelty or similar issues to animals or humans. In a number of different countries worldwide, this term is used mostly for preventing animal cruelty. In the UK, it might also be a society that is providing waterways rescue, recovery service or something that gives awards for saving human life.

In the US, the first humane society was ASPCA or American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, founded by Henry Bergh in New York City in 1866. A couple of years later, Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was founded. In the year 2012, the Oregon Humane Society snagged the largest portion of animals in the US with about 97 percent adoption rate and also, 98 percent save rate for an estimated 11000 adoptions made every single year.

The humane societies operating in the US are all independent of similarly named national organizations similar to American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or ASPCA or Humane Society of the United States or HSUS. While these local groups are mostly about adoption, proper sheltering and euthanasia of the animals, national organizations on the other hand are focused most on addressing and coordinating the much bigger problems that are beyond the scope or resources of independent smaller groups.

The truth is, Humane Society of the United States is not operating, funding or controlling local groups. It does however providing supporting grants, standards of care, training of animal care personnel as well as evaluation services. Apart from that, the HSUS are working often with shelters in big scale animal disaster and rescue operations, assist in transporting and caring of rescued animals, evaluation and triage. If you think that is all, the HSUS can also do national promotion of the animal shelter and adoption be it alone or by getting sponsorships of other like-kind charities.

In 1994, the Chronicle of Philanthropy which is industry publication released the result of their biggest study of the credibility and popularity of non-profit and charitable organizations. According to the study made, Humane Society of the United States is at the 6th position out of 100 charities for being the most popular non-profit group in America.

Some local humane society shelters are considered as No Kill. This is defined often as shelter wherein animals are euthanized only when they are deemed to be unadoptable or when they have behavioral issues that can’t be resolved or perhaps, suffering from a condition that can’t be treated by medicine.
